Southwest Monsoon Likely to Reach Kerala by May 26: IMD

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that the southwest monsoon is likely to reach Kerala by May 26, earlier than the usual onset date of June 1.

The southwest monsoon is considered one of the most significant weather events in India, bringing an end to the intense summer heat and dry conditions across the country. The official arrival of the monsoon over the Indian mainland is marked by its onset over Kerala.

According to the latest IMD forecast for 2026, the monsoon may set in over Kerala around May 26. The department has also noted that the prediction carries a model error margin of about four days. Normally, the monsoon reaches Kerala on June 1, with a standard deviation of around seven days.

Will rainfall intensify this year?

Weather systems over the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea are already becoming active. Several southern states have also been receiving widespread pre-monsoon rainfall.

Kerala has witnessed heavy rain and thunderstorms in recent days, which weather experts say are signs of conditions becoming favourable for the advancement of the monsoon.

Why is the monsoon onset important?

The onset of the monsoon in Kerala marks the beginning of the rainy season across much of India. As the monsoon progresses northward, it brings relief from scorching summer temperatures to different regions of the country.

The monsoon plays a crucial role in agriculture, irrigation, hydroelectric power generation, and drinking water availability. After reaching Kerala, the monsoon gradually advances toward northern parts of India, covering most regions over time.

Hope for the agriculture sector

Farmers are hopeful that an early monsoon will benefit agricultural activities, including paddy cultivation. It is also expected to improve water levels in reservoirs.

However, disaster management authorities have warned that heavy rainfall could increase the risk of landslides and flooding, and people are advised to remain cautious.

കർഷകർ ഉൽപ്പാദിപ്പിക്കുന്ന കാർഷിക വിളകൾക്ക് സംഭരണ കേന്ദ്രങ്ങൾ വഴി സർക്കാർ നേരിട്ട് സംഭരണം നടത്തുകയും, തത്സമയം പണം നൽകുന്നതിനുള്ള സംവിധാനം ശക്തിപ്പെടുത്തുകയും വേണം. ഇടനിലക്കാരുടെ ചൂഷണം തടയുന്നതിനായി പഞ്ചായത്ത് തലത്തിൽ കൂടുതൽ കാർഷിക വിപണികൾ തുറക്കുന്നതിനും കർഷകരുടെ ഉൽപന്നങ്ങൾക്ക് ചുരുങ്ങിയത് ഉൽപ്പാദനച്ചെലവിനേക്കാൾ 50 ശതമാനം അധികമെങ്കിലും താങ്ങുവില ഉറപ്പാക്കാനും സർക്കാർ തയറാകണമെന്ന് യോഗം ആവശ്യപ്പെട്ടു.
കാർഷിക മേഖലയിലെ പ്രതിസന്ധി പരിഹരിക്കാൻ സർക്കാർ അടിയന്തരമായി ഉന്നതതല യോഗം വിളിച്ചുചേർക്കണമെന്നും, കർഷകർക്ക് വായ്പ തിരിച്ചടവിന് സാവകാശം നൽകണമെന്നും യോഗം ആവശ്യപ്പെട്ടു.

യോഗം മുൻ ഡി.സി.സി പ്രസിഡൻ്റ് കെ.സി അബു ഉദ്ഘാടനം ചെയ്തു.
