Reports suggest that Indian expatriates in the UAE are facing a severe employment and financial crisis as the US–Israel–Iran conflict (US–Israel–Iran Conflict), which began in February, continues with no clear end in sight. What was initially expected to be a short-lived conflict has now resulted in widespread job losses and salary cuts across several sectors.
The slowdown in business has hit the travel, tourism, and logistics industries the hardest. To reduce costs, many companies have been forced to downsize their workforce and implement significant salary reductions.
Many Indians, Including Keralites, Lose Jobs
Several Indian employees, including many from Kerala who were working as Travel Consultants in Dubai, reportedly lost their jobs in April. Many say they are struggling to send money back home after their visas were cancelled and their settlement payments were delayed. Meeting daily living expenses and paying credit card bills has also become increasingly difficult.
Starting salaries that previously stood at AED 4,000 have now dropped to around AED 2,000–3,000 for new recruits, reflecting the impact of the ongoing economic slowdown.
Although employees in financially stable companies have largely retained their jobs, uncertainty in the market has created significant mental stress among workers.
Hope in the Digital Sector
Despite the crisis, experts say there is still demand for professionals in Information Technology (IT), Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Data Science.
Companies continue to invest in areas such as Customer Intelligence and Automation, while sectors including banking and retail are still hiring candidates with strong digital skills.
According to Himanshu Vasishta, CEO of Sixth Factor Consulting, opportunities remain available for professionals with expertise in emerging digital technologies.
Growing Concern Among Expats
With no certainty over when the conflict will end, thousands of Indian expatriates in the UAE remain worried about their jobs and financial future. If layoffs and salary reductions continue, the impact on expatriate families is expected to become even more severe.
