A low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal has intensified, and Kerala is likely to witness stronger winds and widespread rain over the next five days. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), conditions are becoming increasingly favorable for the advancement of the Southwest Monsoon. The low-pressure area that persisted over the southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal has now intensified into a Well-Marked Low Pressure Area.
The IMD has indicated that the Southwest Monsoon is likely to advance into the South Bay of Bengal, the Andaman Sea, and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands around May 16.
Low Pressure Intensifies; Rainfall Activity Likely to Increase
Due to the strengthening low-pressure system, intense cloud formation and active cyclonic circulation have developed across the Bay of Bengal region. Weather experts are also monitoring the possibility of the system intensifying further within the next 24 to 48 hours.
As a result, rainfall activity is expected to increase across southern Indian states, including Kerala. Thunderstorms accompanied by rain are likely to become more intense, especially during the afternoon and nighttime hours.
Five-Day Rain Alert in Kerala
The IMD has issued a warning for isolated heavy rainfall and thunderstorms across Kerala from May 13 to May 16, 2026. Widespread rainfall is expected across Kerala and Mahe over the next five days. Strong surface winds with speeds ranging from 30 to 50 kmph may also occur in certain regions. Authorities have advised people in hilly areas, coastal regions, and lightning-prone zones to remain especially cautious.
Lightning Safety Advisory
As lightning-related accidents have increased recently in Kerala, the public has been urged to exercise extreme caution. During thunderstorms:
* Avoid standing in open areas
* Do not take shelter under trees
* Minimize the use of electrical appliances
* Fishermen should check official warnings before venturing into the sea
* Stay away from weak trees, hoardings, and power lines due to the possibility of strong winds
Monsoon Advancement at a Crucial Stage
Typically, the Southwest Monsoon reaches the Andaman region during the second half of May and gradually progresses northwestward, reaching the Kerala coast during the first week of June.
This year, atmospheric conditions over the Bay of Bengal appear highly favorable, and weather agencies believe the monsoon progression is likely to continue close to its normal schedule.
Warning for Fishermen
With strong winds expected over the Bay of Bengal and adjoining southern sea regions, fishermen have been advised to remain alert. Authorities have stressed the importance of checking official weather bulletins before heading out to sea.

കർഷകർ ഉൽപ്പാദിപ്പിക്കുന്ന കാർഷിക വിളകൾക്ക് സംഭരണ കേന്ദ്രങ്ങൾ വഴി സർക്കാർ നേരിട്ട് സംഭരണം നടത്തുകയും, തത്സമയം പണം നൽകുന്നതിനുള്ള സംവിധാനം ശക്തിപ്പെടുത്തുകയും വേണം. ഇടനിലക്കാരുടെ ചൂഷണം തടയുന്നതിനായി പഞ്ചായത്ത് തലത്തിൽ കൂടുതൽ കാർഷിക വിപണികൾ തുറക്കുന്നതിനും കർഷകരുടെ ഉൽപന്നങ്ങൾക്ക് ചുരുങ്ങിയത് ഉൽപ്പാദനച്ചെലവിനേക്കാൾ 50 ശതമാനം അധികമെങ്കിലും താങ്ങുവില ഉറപ്പാക്കാനും സർക്കാർ തയറാകണമെന്ന് യോഗം ആവശ്യപ്പെട്ടു.
കാർഷിക മേഖലയിലെ പ്രതിസന്ധി പരിഹരിക്കാൻ സർക്കാർ അടിയന്തരമായി ഉന്നതതല യോഗം വിളിച്ചുചേർക്കണമെന്നും, കർഷകർക്ക് വായ്പ തിരിച്ചടവിന് സാവകാശം നൽകണമെന്നും യോഗം ആവശ്യപ്പെട്ടു.
യോഗം മുൻ ഡി.സി.സി പ്രസിഡൻ്റ് കെ.സി അബു ഉദ്ഘാടനം ചെയ്തു.
