Kerala Weather: Heavy Rain Continues in North; Ground Caves In and Wells Collapse in Kozhikode

Heavy monsoon rain is still hitting the northern parts of Kerala today. The rainwater has soaked deep into the ground, causing the soil to weaken. This has led to dangerous ground cave-ins and well collapses in several areas.

Weather experts say that new satellite images show thick rain clouds over North and Central Kerala. This means heavy rain will continue until at least July 10.
​People living in the hilly areas of Kozhikode, Wayanad, and Malappuram need to be very careful.

70-Year-Old Public Well Collapses in Karassery

​In Karassery, near Mukkam (Kozhikode), a historic public well completely collapsed last night. The ground around the well became too soft from the non-stop rain, causing the entire structure to sink into the earth.

This well was over 70 years old. It was a very important water source for many families in the area. Local residents say the well never dried up, even during the hottest summers.

Because the ground is still moving, people living nearby are scared. They are asking local authorities to put up safety fences immediately to prevent further accidents.

Family Evacuated in Puthuppadi After Sinkhole Appears

Another scary incident happened in Puthuppadi, a village at the bottom of the hills.

At a place called Adivaram, a private well behind the house of a resident named Faisal completely caved in. The heavy concrete wall around the well crashed straight down into a giant hole.

Because the giant hole was right next to the house, the building became unsafe to live in. Village officers and panchayat members visited the spot and immediately moved the family to a safer place.

തീവ്ര മഴയെ തുടര്‍ന്ന് പമ്പാ നദിയില്‍ വെള്ളപൊക്കം ഉണ്ടായ പശ്ചാത്തലത്തില്‍ നിറപുത്തരി ചടങ്ങുകള്‍ക്ക് ശബരിമല നട തുറക്കുന്ന ഓഗസ്റ്റ് 2, 3 തീയതികളില്‍ ശബരിമല ദര്‍ശനം നടത്താന്‍ തീരുമാനിച്ചിട്ടുള്ള ഭക്തര്‍ കഴിവതും യാത്ര ഒഴിവാക്കണമെന്ന് തിരുവിതാംകൂര്‍ ദേവസ്വം ബോര്‍ഡ് അറിയിച്ചു. 

ഓഗസ്റ്റ് മാസത്തില്‍ തന്നെ ചിങ്ങമാസ പൂജകള്‍ക്കായും (ഓഗസ്റ്റ് 16 മുതല്‍ 21 വരെയും) ഓണത്തോട് അനുബന്ധിച്ച പൂജകള്‍ക്കായും (ഓഗസ്റ്റ് 24 മുതല്‍ 28 വരെയും) ശബരിമല നട തുറക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. ഇത് ദര്‍ശനത്തിനായി ഭക്തര്‍ക്ക് തിരഞ്ഞെടുക്കാവുന്നതാണെന്നും ബോര്‍ഡ് പറഞ്ഞു. കനത്ത  മഴ തുടരുന്നതിനാലും മണ്ണിടിച്ചില്‍ സാധ്യതയുള്ളതിനാലുമാണ് തിരുവിതാംകൂര്‍ ദേവസ്വം ബോര്‍ഡ് ഭക്തരോട് ഇത്തരത്തില്‍ ഒരു അഭ്യര്‍ത്ഥന നടത്തിയത്.
