JAKARTA : Indonesia A strong 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of eastern Indonesia on Friday morning, terrifying residents but causing no immediate casualties or structural damage.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the deep-seated tremor occurred at 11:31 AM local time (02:31 GMT) at a depth of approximately 120 kilometers (75 miles). The epicenter was located about 58 kilometers west of Tobelo in the North Maluku province, a region encompassing the island of Halmahera.
No Tsunami Threat Issued Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) quickly assessed the situation and confirmed that due to the significant depth of the earthquake, there is no threat of a tsunami. Neighbors like Malaysia also verified that regional waters remain safe. However, BMKG authorities have urged local residents to remain vigilant for potential aftershocks.
Despite the lack of major damage, the shaking caused brief panic in nearby towns.
“I was sitting and having coffee at a roadside coffee stall when suddenly my chair started rocking. I panicked for a moment because I'm still traumatised by the past earthquakes,” Umar Abbas, a resident of Ternate located roughly 114 kilometers from the epicenter told AFP.

Today's tremor follows a separate 6.7-magnitude earthquake that struck central Indonesia's Sulawesi island roughly two weeks prior, highlighting the region's constant geological volatility. Local disaster management agencies in North Maluku are continuing to monitor the situation, though no emergency evacuations have been ordered.
